Summary:
Goldschmitt is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with expertise in COBOL development on Unisys mainframes. This position supports the Headquarters Accounting Reporting System (HQARS) used by DFAS for departmental accounting, consolidated reporting, and mission-critical financial processes.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain COBOL applications in a Unisys mainframe environment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, including abend conditions and performance bottlenecks.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle: requirements, design, coding, testing, documentation, and deployment.
- Support system integration efforts, data conversions, and migrations to modernized architectures as needed.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to create technical specifications and ensure compliance with DFAS standards, audits, and security requirements (e.g., RMF, STIGs).
- Provide on-call support for critical mainframe processes and coordinate with stakeholders for timely problem resolution.
- Experience supporting large-scale financial or accounting systems is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies, version control, and configuration management best practices.
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting production abends, analyzing logs, and resolving performance issues.
- Understanding of DoD or federal security practices (FISCAM, RMF, NIST) a plus.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, IT, or related discipline. Equivalent experience may be considered
- Possess 7+ years’ experience in COBOL on Unisys or other mainframe environments.
- Possess strong knowledge of mainframe job control (ECL), QLP, or related tools.
- Possess US citizenship as well as the ability to obtain a favorable Tier 3 (Noncritical-Sensitive) background investigation
- Possess the ability to work effectively in a remote/telework setting, including off-hours support for mission-critical releases or payroll runs.
